Crossing the Finish Line: Construction Blog #7

Ball at Centre spot

We got there!

It seems appropriate that the finish line for the track was pretty much the last part of the project to be completed. After months of construction, the field and track are now complete and have started to be used by the students at Heart Lake Secondary School, our Footy Sevens Soccer Leagues, our Footy For All Kids soccer programs and various rental groups.

The team from Tracktech International had flown in to paint the lanes and lines on the track. We had no idea how much went into that part of the job. It took three days and we’re definitely in good hands: it was the same team that lined the Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium in Beijing!

We’ve been very lucky all round with all of the contractors and experts working on the field, and we are absolutely blown away by the quality of the field, the track, the lighting and the other parts of the field. The initial feedback from players, parents and kids has been fantastic and we are delighted to finally see soccer being played on the field.

What’s coming up on the field?

As we posted yesterday, we had our first Footy For All kids programming on there on Tuesday, and last night our first ever league games kicked off (see the photos below). Late registration is still available for both adults and kids and rental times are also available. And don’t forget our Kicking Cancer’s Butt Charity tournament that’s coming up on Saturday 23rd of September.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the planning, construction and completion of the project in any way, and we look forward to working together with Heart Lake Secondary School and the Peel District School Board at the field for many years to come.

Kids soccer programs for age 4-11

We’re not just for adults . . .

Kids soccer programs for age 4-11

Although we can’t wait to see all of our adult players out there “getting their footy on” in our upcoming 7v7 soccer leagues and at the Kicking Cancer’s Butt tournament, don’t forget we’ll also be launching some soccer fun for kids at the field.

Our Footy For All youth programs are designed to be fun for kids, but also parent friendly too. As parents ourselves, we know that youth sports can sometimes be very demanding on parents and can require a significant financial and time commitment. We’re designing our programs to be as straightforward as possible: once a week at the same venue, competitively priced and with an easy sign-up process.

Starting from the first week of September and running through until late October, we’ll have midweek and weekend programs for boys and girls age 4-11. They’ll be a mixture of skill development and games at the brand new turf soccer field at Heart Lake Secondary School, 296 Conestoga Road, Brampton.

Footy For All youth soccer programs feature the following:

  • A consistent venue where parents and children know where they will be each week.
  • Dedicated staff going the extra mile and making sure every participant is involved and having fun.
  • Top class turf soccer fields to give the best possible surface for kids to learn. No wear and tear as the season goes on. The field remains the same regardless of the weather or time of year.
  • A simple, hassle-free sign-up process with all the program details laid out before sign-up.
  • Fast and helpful customer service when you need it.
  • An inclusive environment where everyone is welcome and boys and girls play together on the field
  • Emphasis on fun. Whatever level you are at, the emphasis is on sportsmanship and enjoyment over player development
  • A desire to give back to the community by offering subsidized spots to people in need or to community partners.

Visit the Footy For All website to see a full list of or upcoming fall kids programs.

Almost There! Construction Blog #6

FIFA-grade soccer field at heart Lake Secondary School in Brampton

We are so close to being ready to go at the new field! The field itself is completely finished with the turf down, all the various field lines stitched into place and the goals and divider nets etc. all on site and getting assembled.

The last piece of the puzzle will be the final coat on top of the track and then painting the lanes and start and finish lines. Unfortunately we’ve had a couple of delays on this last step due to the weather but if we can get some good luck with the weather, we should be all done within the next week.

If you do happen to pop by to see what the new field looks like, PLEASE DO NOT GO ONTO THE FIELD AS THE TRACK SURFACE MAY NOT BE DRY and walking across it can ruin the surface and necessitate another coat and another delay. Sorry to get a little preachy there everyone, we know people are curious and have been coming by and want to get on the field to see what it is like, and we just want to make sure that everyone knows not to go onto the field until after it is all complete.

If any of you are members of a local club or sports organisation, and would like a chance to try out the field for free before the end of August, contact us at chris@footysevens.com  or by calling us on 289-632-1855 and you can book a time to bring your team down for a training session, rearranged game or kick-about free of charge.

Don’t forget we have our 7v7 soccer leagues starting in the first week of September and running through until the end of October. Be one of the first teams to get a chance to play on the newest venue in town. Full details can be found on the Footy Sevens website.

For those of you with kids, don’t forget we have our youth soccer programs starting that week too, with programs for boys and girls age 4-11 that are fun for kids, and easy for adults. We want to take the stress out of kids sports! You can find full details at footyforall.ca

Fieldturf Revolution 360 getting laid at Heart Lake Secondary School in Brampton

It’s an exciting couple of days for us as we are finally starting to see the turf laid on the new field. It’s getting closer and closer to completion and to the start of our adult leagues and kids programs. After months of the heavy construction of making sure the base underneath the turf is perfect, the giant rolls of turf are finally being rolled out and stitched together to form the field. We have an amazing crew of installers from Fieldturf here to lay the Revolution 360 turf and the care and attention that they put into getting the field just right is incredible.

There are large sections of the field already covered and within a couple of days all of the area inside the inner oval of the track will be turf.

All of the lines that run side to side across the field come already woven into the turf. In the photo below, you can see the centre line of the full size soccer field, flanked by the blue sidelines of 7v7 fields 2 and 3. When we are playing 7v7 with the field divided into 4, the removable divider net will run the length of the centre line, keeping the ball close at hand for all the 7v7 games.

What about the other field lines?

All of the lines which run in the other direction, like the sides of the penalty boxes and the centre circle etc. are cut into the turf after it is laid, so all of the lines are permanently part of the turf right from the start. After that the “infill” is added to the turf surface the sand and rubber mixture gives the turf the familiar feel that is ideal for the soccer, rugby, lacrosse and other sports that will be played there.

If you would like to get on the field, there are a number of way to do so:

Join one of our Footy Sevens 7v7 soccer leagues which begin in late August. We’ve got men’s women’s and coed soccer available from Sunday to Thursday. You can currently save up to $200 off of the cost of joining one of our leagues.

Construction of new field and track at Heart Lake Secondary School

On Track: Construction Blog #4

Heart Lake Secondary school new track construction

The asphalt for the track in place at Heart Lake Secondary School

We’re starting to see noticeable changes on the project each week as the track and turf get closer and closer to completion. The major change over the past few days has been the asphalt being laid in layers between the two curbs which had already been installed. The asphalt forms the basis for the track with the high tech “rubber” layer laid on top of the smooth surface to give the energy return and tactile feel that are the hallmark of modern track surfaces.

The base layer beneath the turf continues to be constructed layer by layer and the drainage system is now in place. The top layers (of the base) are being worked on to get it up to the exacting specifications required before the turf layer gets put into place. It won’t be long until we see the huge rolls of green turf appear on site, ready to be rolled out onto the field like a carpet and stitched together once laid into place.

We are still on target for a mid-August completion date and leagues, rentals and programming will start in mid to late August. Out kids programming will begin in early September after the schools go back.

We’ll be posting regular updates on the construction of the new field and track at Heart Lake Secondary, 296 Conestoga Drive, Brampton on torontofootyblog.com. For details of our upcoming adult 7v7 soccer leagues and field rentals go to toronto.footysevens.com and for kids programs, check us out at our FootyForAll website or contact us at chris@footysevens.com.

Taking Shape: Construction Blog #3

Track and Field construction in Brampton

The flat base that the turf will be laid on top of is nearing completion. The shape of the running track and the floodlights can clearly be seen.

As you can see from the latest photos, it’s starting to look more like a field and less like a building site at Heart Lake Secondary School in Brampton. There is still a long way to go, but the field and track is starting to take shape. The base for the field is currently being constructed ready for the turf to go on top. The filtering system and drainage are being put in, and the the rolls of turf for the field will be delivered next week. Laying the turf will begin later in the month.

As we wrote in our previous post, the lights are already installed and both the inner and outer curbs for the track are in place. The asphalt for the track will start to be laid later this week.

We are still on target for a mid-August completion date and leagues, rentals and programming will start in August.

We’ll be posting regular updates on the construction of the new field and track at Heart Lake Secondary, 296 Conestoga Drive, Brampton on torontofootyblog.com. Construction Update: June 27th

Floodlights

Ephesus All Field Sports Lighting System

Lights, Camera: Action!

Things are looking a whole lot brighter now! Why? The LED floodlights for the field are on site and have been installed. 4 huge concrete posts have been raised and 9 Ephesus All Field Series lighting fixtures are in place at the top of each post.

One of the best things about the lighting is that it should be the greenest lighting solution of any field in Brampton. The LED lights are far more energy efficient than the traditional metal-halide bulbs and the energy savings are dramatic. The LED system runs at 27,000W at full power, an energy saving of almost 60% over an equivalent system lit with the traditional type of bulbs.

It’s also controllable too, meaning it can be brought up to full power slowly as the daylight fades and sections can be turned off or lowered if only part of the field is in use. The lights can be dimmed anywhere from 10-100% with a a few adjustments from the coordinators cellphone, keeping the wasted energy to an absolute minimum.

Field and Track

Track construction at heart Lake Secondary School, Brampton

3 stages of the track construction so far: the old dirt track, the inner curb goes in and finally the outer curb is put in place and the the surface is smoothed, ready for the asphalt.

The huge pile of dirt and material that was on the field is now gone, and the construction of the drainage base that sits beneath the field is well underway. The second concrete curb the surrounds the outside of the track is now in place, and it looks like a circular roadway is running around the field. It is of course the base level of the track, and asphalt will be laid on top of that before the rubberised track surface goes on top towards the end of the project.

We are still on target for a mid-August completion date and leagues, rentals and programming will start in August.

We’ll be posting regular updates on the construction of the new field and track at Heart Lake Secondary, 296 Conestoga Drive, Brampton on torontofootyblog.com.
